CHAPTER 12

Idrove over to the home improvement store after work to see if I might run into Shawn Boyd. I needed a new drawer pull for my bathroom vanity, anyway.

Wandering through the home-improvement store, I searched for someone who would be young enough to have dated Everly. But unfortunately, that could have been said about a number of the employees there because the store appeared to employ quite a few people, many of them younger men. I wandered from one department to another, and when I came upon one of these young men, I would surreptitiously glance at their name tag, but none of them read ‘Shawn’. After spending forty-five minutes doing this, I finally gave up and went over to the aisle where drawer knobs and pulls were kept. To my surprise, they had an enormous selection of them, and I started looking through the brushed nickel ones, hoping to find one that would match the others on the vanity.

“Is there something I can help you find?” a young man with sandy-colored hair asked as he placed some drawer pulls into one of the small sliding drawers on the wall.

I turned to him, and my eyes went to his name tag—‘Shawn’. I smiled at him. “Yes, I’m searching for a particular drawer pull. It’s brushed nickel and has a little bit of a decorative edge on the corners. I know that doesn’t tell you a lot, but it’s kind of all I’ve got to go on right now.”

He smiled and nodded. “All the brushed nickel pulls and knobs are going to be right here,” he said, pointing to the section. “You didn’t happen to take a picture of it on your phone, did you?”

I turned and looked at him. “Are you kidding me? Wow. That would have made things easy, wouldn’t it? I don’t know; it didn’t even cross my mind,” I admitted, chuckling. I felt kind of silly about this oversight.

He smiled. “I know, people do this all the time, and if I didn’t work here, I probably wouldn’t think about it either. That’s okay, though. We’ll just take a look at what we’ve got and see if you spot the same design.”

I nodded. “Are you new here? I don’t remember seeing you here before.” I was acting like I was in here all the time, but I rarely came in. Still, he was definitely new.

He shook his head. “Not really new. I’ve been working here for six months now.”

“Oh, I guess it’s been a while since I’ve been in,” I said, glancing at the drawer pulls. “Are you from around here?”

He shook his head. “No, I’m from Iowa. I just moved to Lilac Bay about a month before I started working here.” He pulled open a drawer and put two drawer pulls inside and closed it.

“Oh gosh, you’re a long way from home then. What brings you to California?” I asked.

He grinned. “I got tired of the snow. It’s so much nicer living near the ocean, and it’s kind of been a dream of mine all my life.
